The LabBench CPAR+ is a device for cuff pressure algometry that offer computer-controlled pressure stimulations, enabling protocols that are impossible with conventional handheld pressure algometry.
As the pressure stimulations are computer controlled, it is possible to perform protocols that require precise temporal control over the applied pressure. Possible protocols with the LabBench CPAR+ device are the determination of cuff pressure pain detection and tolerance thresholds, temporal summation, spatial summation, and conditioned pain modulation.
The CPAR+ device can synchronise external 3rd party equipment with a digital trigger output and be triggered by a digital input. This enables the CPAR+ device to be used in experiments where biophysical signals such as EEG are recorded.
The devices have a form factor of A4 paper (30 x 21 x 10cm) and weigh 3kg. This enables them to be easily transported between experimental sites. They require an external air supply, which can be supplied either through readily available and low-cost standard air compressors, compressed air bottles (i.e. diving bottles) or compressed air systems.

A rating scale that can be used with experimenter-defined rating scales, such as Visual Analog Scales, Numerical Rating Scales, or Wong-Baker FACES® Scales.
Wong-Baker FACES® is a registered trademark of the Wong-Baker FACES Foundation.

Subjects can use a handheld response button to indicate a response to a given stimulus. These responses may be used to estimate a psychophysical threshold, such as the perception threshold, the pain detection threshold, or the pain tolerance threshold.

The capabilities of the LabBench® CPAR+ device can be expanded with a LabBench® I/O stimulus/response device. With the LabBench® I/O device, the pressure stimuli can be synchronised with external 3rd party recording equipment such as EEG amplifiers, and cross-modality stimulations can be performed with electrical stimulators or other similar stimulators.

By nature, research is novel, and no two research groups are the same. Our approach for the LabBench® and our research devices is that they serve as a starting point for your research studies that can be tailored to your needs. If you think LabBench® may or can be made into providing what is needed for your research studies, please contact us for an informal meeting or send an enquiry. Then we will explore whether there is a fit between what you need for your experiments and what we can provide.
Our goal is to create open and novel research devices for neuroscience.
